World’s Longest Reigning Monarch
It is just over a year ago that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became Britain’s longest reigning Monarch. This prestigious event was covered in our article The Queen Becomes Longest Reigning Monarch.
After reigning as Thailand’s Head of State for 70 years King Bhumibol Adulyadej, sadly passed away on Thursday 13th October. Subsequently, Queen Elizabeth II has now become the world’s longest reigning Monarch.
King Bhumibol ascended to the throne in Thailand on 9th June 1946 following the death of his brother King Ananda Mahidol. Hundreds of mourners gathered outside the Bangkok hospital when news of King Bhumibol’s death was announced. Stricken with grief, many wore yellow or pink clothes in his honour. Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn who is 63 will be the new monarch. Meanwhile, Thailand will hold a year-long mourning period in respect to King Bhumibol.
Long to Reign Over Us
Queen Elizabeth II has now been on the throne for 64 years. On 9th September 2015, her reign as Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch was celebrated with the launch of the Long to Reign Over Us commemorative stamps and Longest Reigning Monarch £5 coins.
Across the world, the other longest reigning monarchs include:
- King of Malaysia, Abdul Halim of Kedah – 58 years
- Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah – 49 years
- Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said – 46 years
- Queen Margrethe II of Denmark – 44 years
- Emir of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates), Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi III – 44 years
- King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden – 43 years
However, whilst Queen Elizabeth II is the world’s current longest reigning Monarch she still has a few years to beat the record for the longest ever reign. That record belongs to King Sobhuza II of Swaziland. He was the Paramount Chief and then King for 82 years. His reign lasted from 10th December 1899 to his death on 21st August 1982.
