What would YOU do if you lost everything, including all your important documents, private data and even your most treasured photos and images?

This scenario can soon become a real possibility if you aren’t making regular backups of your data and keeping your files and folders in more than one location!

Taking place every year, World Backup Day on the 31st of March helps bring attention to this issue, by providing useful advice on how to backup our online data and reminding us of the risks of data loss should we opt to only use and store one copy of everything we own in the digital world.

But if you don’t believe in the importance of regular data backups, then you might want to take a look at some of these startling facts and figures provided by Verbatim

Why is World Back Up Day Important?

We’ve briefly covered some of the main reasons as to why World Backup Day is important in reminding us to keep copies of our data, but here are some facts and figures about data that may just shock you…

Did you know?

37% of UK businesses experience at least one cyber-attack every month
• More than 20% of businesses that experience data loss or are the victims of cyber attacks lose customers as well
• The average security breach can cost a large sized company upwards of £36,000
• 1 in 10 computers are infected with a virus each month
• 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute

As you can see, it makes for some worrying reading indeed!

But what are we currently doing in order to protect our data?

30% of people have NEVER backed up their personal data
• 29% of data disasters are caused by complete ACCIDENT
• On average, only 5% of companies’ folders are EFFICIENTLY protected
• 94% of malware is delivered by EMAIL.
• Over HALF of critical corporate date is kept on unprotected PCs and laptops

When taking these statistics into account, it becomes quite easy to see why we need World Backup Day!

Selecting the Right Type of Storage for the Right Job

When backing up your important data, it’s always important to remember that you need to select the right type of storage solution for the right type of job.

Not every storage option is suitable for every type of data, so take a look at Verbatim’s infographic below for an overview on the data storage options that are available.

USB Drives & Memory Cards

Due to their small physical size and ease of use, USB Drives and Memory Cards are best put to use when transferring data from one location to another, or as a temporary storage solution.

However, due to their limited capacities and a data lifetime expectancy of only 5-10 years, you wouldn’t want to use one if making a backup or an archive of large data.

Hard Drives

With their large capacities, low cost per gigabyte and fast file transfer speeds, HDDs are the perfect solution for day-to-day data backup and general data storage.

But with their large number of mechanical parts, they also feature a limited data lifetime expectancy of only 5-10 years.

Solid State Drives

Super-fast and more resistant to knocks than regular hard drives, SSDS (Solid State Drives) are great for short term data backups and for transferring files to different locations.

The downsides are that the cost per gigabyte for storage is usually higher than other devices and their capacities are usually limited.

The Cloud

The great advantage with using The Cloud for storage is that your important data is saved within a server farm, meaning that you will be able to access it from wherever you are in the world.

It does have limitations though – you will need access to an internet connection to be able to retrieve your data and the download speeds can sometimes be slower than would expect.

Additionally, there’s also the concern of if your data will always be there and if it is, who else might be able to access it?

Optical Media

For files and data that you are hoping to archive and keep forever, you should save it onto Optical Media which includes CD, DVD or Blu-Ray.

Using this solution means that your data can’t accidentally be erased and is likely to last for 25 years or longer, with some Multimedia Discs lasting over 1000 years!

As Easy as 3,2,1

Not only is it crucial to know what storage solutions are available for you to back up your data with, but it’s just as vital to understand the best practice for backing it up.

As illustrated below, it’s as easy as 3, 2, 1!

3 – Have At Least Three Copies of Your Data

In addition to your primary data, you should also have at least two more backups, which will help to significantly reduce the risk of losing data.

These could be physical and/or cloud-based data solutions.

2 – Store the Copies on at Least Two Different Types of Media

It’s best practice to keep copies of your data on at least two different storage types, such as internal hard disk drives and removable storage media (such as tapes, external hard drives, USB drives, SD Cards, memory cards, CDs, DVDs)

1 – Keep at Least One Offsite Backup Copy

It may be obvious but it’s still worth mentioning that you shouldn’t keep your external storage device in the same room as your production storage.

If there is a sudden fire, flood or burglary, you would probably end up losing ALL your data!
