Three Weeks To Go To BBC Children In Need – Be A Hero!

In just 21 days time, millions of viewers will be glued to their screens as Sir Terry Wogan and a host of presenters introduce a fun filled night of entertainment for the 35th BBC Children in Need Appeal.

2013 saw a record breaking £31.1 million raised on the night, with £49.6 million raised overall in 2013. This year the charity is hoping to surpass this figure and raise even more. Since the first BBC Children in Need appeal way back in 1980, over £740m has been raised to help disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. Along the way, millions of TV viewers have been inspired to donate following countless memorable sketches and performances.

Here at the Post Office Shop we’ve taken a look back at past BBC Children in Need appeals with a snapshot of some of the most memorable moments and achievements.

Instantly recognised as the face of BBC Children in Need, Pudsey Bear first took to our screens in 1985 and has remained synonymous with  BBC Children in Need ever since, noted for donning a special one-off party hat in 2004.

Millions of viewers have been glued to their screens over the years. Special one-off episodes of Doctor Who have been a regular occurrence; amongst the most memorable we recall is the show back in 2007 when David Tennant came face to face with Peter Davidson for the first time.

A sketch involving two of Britain’s best loved soaps is also a fondly remembered recent highlight which captivated viewers. This mini-episode ‘mash up’ featuring several actors from both Coronation Street and Eastenders was the first time the much-loved characters had come face-to-face.

You may have seen that Gareth Malone’s All-Star Choir is releasing the official 2014 BBC Children in Need single, destined to follow in the footsteps of ‘Perfect Day’ by Lou Reed and various artists which reached number one in the charts way back in 1997.

The Post Office and Post Office Shop are proud to once again support this fantastic charity in 2014. The theme for BBC Children in Need this year is to ‘Be A Hero’.

A number of celebrities including Peter Andre and Xtra Factor’s Sarah Jane Crawford are supporting the campaign by transforming into superheroes and now they are encouraging everyone else to follow suit. But if dressing up in fancy dress as a superhero isn’t quite your thing, wearing a ‘Be A Hero’ badge is the ideal way to support Pudsey this year.

These ‘Be A Hero’ badges come in two sizes – a small badge in a black and silver design, as well as a large badge in a brightly coloured red and blue spiral background.  Everyone can get their hands on single ‘Be A Hero’ badges in Post Office branches nationwide or alternatively they are available in packs of 10 badges here at the Post Office Shop.
