Think About Sustainability This Thursday
There is plenty of food for thought when it comes to environmental issues. As it is Green Office Week this seems the perfect opportunity to think about how we can improve the world we live in. Indeed, on what is being dubbed ‘Think About It Thursday’, now is the time to look at the bigger picture and appreciate some of the pressing sustainability issues that exist in today’s world.
The planet’s eco-systems are deteriorating and one of the ways we can address the situation is by becoming more sustainable at work as well as at home.
But what is sustainability?
In essence it’s all about looking after the environment and reducing carbon energy consumption. To this end, here at the Post Office Shop we’ve researched some quite staggering sustainability facts about just how much waste ends up as landfill on an annual basis and illustrated some of these mind blowing statistics in our office sustainability infographic below.
Of the 18 million tonnes of waste which ends up as landfill each year in the UK, two of the most widely thrown away items we use which contribute significantly to this statistic are paper as well as ink and toner cartridges. Therefore addressing how paper as well as ink and toner cartridges are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner is vital in order to undertake sustainable business practices.
Why does it matter that millions of tonnes of waste end up as landfill you might well ask? Not only is landfill a blot on our landscape but what’s more many materials which end up as landfill contain toxic substances and gases which can become environmental hazards for many, many years with negative atmospheric and hydrological effects.
As well as toxins which cause damage to soil and groundwater over time, landfill also leads to the formation of leachate liquid forming as the waste breaks down. This highly toxic substance pollutes the land, ground water and waterways.
And it that’s not all. Many of the materials which end up at landfill sites eventually lead to the release of methane which is a greenhouse gas that is far more potent that carbon dioxide which are very harmful to the environment with serious implications for global warming and climate change. Indeed landfill sites are said to be produce at least a quarter of the UK’s total methane emissions.
Whilst great strides have been made to recycle more of what we consume, we still dump very high levels of waste as landfill because we consume more of everything than we ever did before.
It is imperative that we all embrace an eco-friendly stance at work and recycle as many materials as possible to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfills bearing in mind the harmful effects outlined above.
Here’s four simple ways that can all make a difference when it comes to becoming a sustainable business:
Firstly, it is straight forward to halve paper consumption simply by implementing double-sided printing as the default setting for all the office printers at work. Secondly, there are a vast array of eco-friendly green office products available which are made from recycled materials. Thirdly, using a verified waste collector to dispose of inks and toners such as the Recycling factory is simple and straight forward. Last but not least, having communal bins for each recyclable waste stream instead of personal bins will certainly pay dividends as we strive to go green in the office.
