Step Backwards With Retro Stationery
Today is World Stationery Day and we’re celebrating by looking at some of the retro stationery that was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. With the rise in popularity for retro items across many different markets, it’s only fair that stationery also see a rise in retro popularity.
Nostalgia is when we feel emotions specifically related to events that have happened in the past, or when we see objects that remind us of the past. The feelings invoked can be both positive and negative with the origin of the word being Greek, from nostos for homecoming and algos meaning pain or ache.
Retro items are becoming more and more popular nowadays, from the release of films such as Ready Player One that specifically cater towards 1980s nostalgia to gaming giant Nintendo releasing miniature versions of their classic consoles. The love for retro items is extending to retro stationery as well, with the classic cylinder pencil case becoming more popular with designs such as famous soft drinks such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola being seen more often.

Attending school as a child or teenager meant that we were all exposed to fads that became popular before disappearing soon after. Some of these include the gel pen craze of the 1990s with the rise of multi-coloured pens that often came in glitter or fragranced ranges that people just simply had to have.
Other much-loved stationery items included the classic Crayola stamp pens, the perfect items for any kid to decorate their school work – even if the teacher didn’t like it!
