How To Use Social: Instagram

Instagram has seen a sharp rise in user figures since it was launched in October 2010. The online photo sharing, video sharing and social networking site enables users to take pictures and videos and then share them on a variety of other social networking sites.

Instagram is a great way for businesses to increase their brand visibility, it allows them to provide a representation of their company or brand through the medium of imagery and video content . Along with gaining a visual representation of their brand, it allows companies to create engaging content and receive interaction from followers.

Here at the Post Office Shop, we would like to share a few ideas on how to increase the engagement rate of images and videos on Instagram.

Follow Back

If an Instagram user follows an account and they have an active interest in certain subjects, there is no harm in following those users. This can help facilitate the potential to find brands and hashtags (we’ll discuss this at a later point) which represent a brand. In addition, sharing content published by other followers  will help cultivate strong relationships with those followers.

Showcase Photos Of Employees

Showcasing employees at work demonstrates they are value for their contribution which can in turn boost morale. Not only that, it also provides a behind the scenes look at a company and a unique insight into how it operates on a day to day basis.

Be Visual

By sharing inventive ways to showcase products and services, the potential of engagement for those images increases. Starbucks are a really good example of this by creating visually appealing images which showcase their products. Another way of doing this is to include images of public interest or which have a humorous appeal likely to be shared extensively.

Use Hashtags

Similar to Twitter, Instagram allows the use of hashtags within a captioned image. By using hashtags which accurately reflect the theme of the image or the industry relating to the image; the possibility of this image appearing when users search for those terms is enhanced.

Cross Post

Sharing Instagram posts on other social networks not only makes followers aware that the company is present on Instagram, it increases the reach of the post too. When Instagram images are shared on Twitter, the tweet will be composed of the images caption. As Twitter is not integrated with Instagram, the image will not be displayed directly but it will render as a link to the Instagram post.

As Facebook own Instagram, it is integrated with the image and photo sharing network. The posts which are shared will appear like any other photo that is shared on Facebook. The image caption will appear in full including the hashtags which have been used.
