Sketching Out City Landscapes
April 23 marks the start of National Stationery Week and today is officially #makeanote day. To celebrate this week of all things stationery, we’re taking a look at the wonderful art of London based artist Carl Lavia, who makes a name for himself sketching out cityscapes.
The extraordinary works of art are created by Carl Lavia, who is a self-taught artist that has been sketching since he was 5 years old. A keen interest in the aesthetics that maps, architecture and cityscapes offer have culminated into his current work.
Lavia joined forces with photographer Lorna Le Bredonchel in 2016 and the two formed the hugely ambitious project of drawing the 69 cities of the UK. This project involves creating large scale sketches of all 69 cities, which includes 51 in England, seven in Scotland, a further five in Wales and give in Northern Ireland.
The large undertaking involves them engaging in an epic road trip, with each artwork estimated to take between a month to three months to complete. During this time, the city is explored by foot and through small sketches and photographs, Lavia recreates the city on paper.
Sketching With Pen and Paper
Carl Lavia predominantly works with ink on archival paper, with a mix of both technical and Bic pens being used. The Dundee landscape that has been completed has proven to be the largest that the pair have created, with it measuring 3 metres long. It was also reported that it took over 100 Bic pens just to complete the sketch.
So far, the duo has completed sketches of Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and Dundee, with 65 more cities to go. They are currently in the process of both mapping out and researching the Scottish city of Stirling.
For anyone who is interested in keeping up to date with their progress, then take a look at their Twitter account to keep up to date. The drawings that have been completed are currently exhibited on the Sketch in the City website.
