Royal Mail to Launch Parcel Postboxes in August
Following a successful trial in 2018, the Royal Mail have now announced the launch of Parcel Postboxes across the UK to take place this year.
You may remember last year our article on the Royal Mail trialing parcel postboxes at select locations in the UK.
Due to the success of this trial run, the Royal Mail have announced this week the intention to launch parcel postboxes across the UK over a six-month period, starting in August this year.
The launch will mark a groundbreaking moment for the Royal Mail and postage as the parcel postboxes are the very first of their kind and are the first major change to postboxes for nearly 160 years.
First Major Change of the Postbox in 160 Years
As mentioned, Royal Mail’s announcement to launch parcel postboxes this year in the UK is a history-making one.
This is because the origin of the postbox starts all the way back in 1852, where it was first trialed on the island of Jersey.
The regular use of these postboxes and the overall success of the trial meant that they were then subsequently introduced in the UK in 1852 by novelist and senior GPO executive, Anthony Trollope, and have been in place ever since.
As part of the repurposing, Royal Mail will convert existing meter boxes into the new parcel postbox design, which features a wider aperture and secure design.
For small businesses and marketplace sellers, it will allow them to post any pre-paid parcels (pre-paid through Click & Drop) in the same method as regular letters and mail.
Royal Mail’s launch of parcel postboxes will also become one of the biggest innovations in parcel mailing since the launch of Parcel Post in 1883.
Making the Lives of Customers Easier
In a quote taken from their press release, Mark Street, Head of Campaigns at Royal Mail commented:
“The wide scale introduction of parcel postboxes is one of the many ways we at Royal Mail are looking to make the lives of our customers easier.
The parcel postbox trial last year was a success, and we hope that the wider roll-out gives added flexibility to online sellers who might be running a business in their spare time and not keeping regular office hours.”
Where to Find the Parcel Postboxes
In addition to his comments, the Royal Mail have announced where the new parcel postboxes will be located and are listed in the table below:
