Pembrokeshire Postman Celebrates 50 Years with Royal Mail
Half a century may seem a long time to be working for one company for, but that’s exactly what a Pembrokeshire Postman has done as he celebrates 50 years with the Royal Mail this year.
Working within the delivery areas of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire Postman John Charles has recently spent some time reflecting on his 50 years of service working for the Royal Mail. Starting his very first stint with the company at the young age of 15, John was a hard-working Telegram Boy at the Old Post Office on Quay Street in Haverfordwest.

Whilst John’s original workplace (the old Post Office on Quay Street) has now been renovated into a community centre known as ‘HaverHub’, John looks back on his first job with the Royal Mail fondly.
“It has gone so quick when you look back at it. It seems like time is standing still when you are young but my time flies nowadays!” Reminiscing on the sights, sounds and smells of his first ever workplace, John explains: “The main memory I have is the smell, because it was completely different to our offices now. There was a wooden floor, the sorting furniture was all wood, and we used wicker baskets to carry letters. It was a lovely old building.”
Future Plans for the Pembrokeshire Postman?
Although he has now reached half a century delivering mail and important parcels in and around the Haverfordwest area, John isn’t planning a retirement speech just yet. He is however, planning to work in part time shifts in the near future and will attempt to put his feet up a little bit more!
John also had some advice for any younger members of staff that are planning to or are currently working in the postal service. “Be calm and the job just flows really. It is daunting when new people start and they see the sorting office at half seven in the morning. But we always get it organised before deliveries at nine.”
‘A Character Who Takes Enormous Pride in His Job’
The Pembrokeshire Postman’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed during his time working for the company. As Royal Mail Manager, Nicky Smith comments, John’s character and pride for the job has continued to shine through.
“John is the perfect example of embracing change and when you think of the change he has been part of his behaviors really align to our company values. He’s a true gent and a privilege to have as part of my team.”
