New Gruffalo Coin Released into the Wild!

The Royal Mint are continuing the Gruffalo celebrations on it’s 20th anniversary with the launch of a new Gruffalo coin!

You may remember that is was only as recent as the start of this year that we saw the first Gruffalo coin released by the Royal Mint.

The classic story, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, was first published 20 years ago and sold a staggering 14.5m copies worldwide!

The first Gruffalo coin was so high in demand that it sold out within a day of going on general sale, which disappointed many coin collectors and fans of the popular children’s storybook.

But now, fans of this timeless tale can rejoice once more with the launch of a brand-new Gruffalo Coin which this time also features the Mouse!

New Gruffalo Coin Celebrates World’s Favourite Literary Monster

With the new design depicting the iconic scene of when the Gruffalo meets the Mouse for the very first time, Nicola Howell, Director of Consumer at the Royal Mint, spoke of how the new Gruffalo coin has been launched due to the phenomenal response the first coin received upon its announcement.

“Following the fantastic response to the Gruffalo’s debut appearance on a 50p coin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the book, we are delighted to introduce and additional coin capturing Mouse and Gruffalo’s first meeting, continuing the story of one of the world’s most favourite literary monsters on UK coins.”

Author of the Gruffalo books, Julia Donaldson, expressed how the release of the Gruffalo coins made the fictional monster’s 20th anniversary, all that more memorable.

“The launch of the first Gruffalo coins in February was a great 20th birthday present for him, and the issue of a second collectable 50p coin in the same year feels like the icing on his birthday cake.”

Illustrator of the novel, Axel Scheffler, spoke of his hopes for the story of the Gruffalo being something that children will be able to cherish for “a long time” whilst adding:

“Having never imagined that the Gruffalo would appear on a coin, it is great that we have two coins in the 20th year of the book”
