National Stationery Week Begins Today
Here at the Post Office Shop we love National Stationery Week which celebrates the power of the written word and the art of putting pen to paper.
An array of stationery items are available for next day delivery within our Brand Shops including a wide selection of Sharpie and Pilot FriXion pens complemented by a range of Wirebound Notebooks from Pukka Pad.
The significance of handwriting has taken on a whole new meaning this year bearing in mind that 2015 marks the 800th anniversary since the creation of the Magna Carta which is widely regarded as one of the most important written documents in British history.
Amongst the momentous and relevant principles contained within the Magna Carta is the 39th clause which gave all ‘free men’ the right to justice and a fair trial. The Magna Carta continues to shape and influence governance in the modern world (with a collectible coin available here at the Post Office Shop) and this handwritten manuscript is a reminder of the extent to which handwriting has stood the test of time.
Indeed, in a recent YouGov poll conducted on behalf of National Stationery Week, 92% of adults said it is important to be able to write by hand and 97% said that they felt it is important for children to still be taught handwriting at school. It is also interesting to note that the research has shown that almost a third (29%) had sent a handwritten letter or note in the previous month.
In a recent article on the Post Office Shop blog we recently posed the question: Is the end of the use of pens and papers in schools in sight? A recent survey conducted provides some evidence that the answer is certainly ‘no’ judging by the importance the majority of parents believe that handwriting has.
National Stationery week coincides nicely with World Stationery Day this Wednesday and to mark the occasion we will be revealing some quirky facts about many of the everyday stationery items widely used at both work and at home that we happen to sell in various pack sizes here at the Post Office Shop.
This year the Post Office Shop is a participating retailer of National Stationery Week and the message loud and clear is that the skill of handwriting remains integral to our everyday lives. So keep writing!
