Today, sees that start of National Chocolate Week. Now, some of us will argue, every week is chocolate week, but we’re happy to celebrate all the same.

It may come as no surprise but, the UK is a nation of chocolate lovers. So much so that the UK chocolate industry is worth a staggering £4 billion.  In fact, we are the second largest consumers of chocolate in Europe (behind Switzerland).

According to research, we Brits prefer milk chocolate to dark chocolate. 57% of us have tucked into some milk chocolate over the past six months, whereas only 23% have eaten dark chocolate. When it comes to white chocolate, a mere 7% of us are “Milky Bar kids”.

However, only 13% can stake a genuine claim to being a chocoholic by not having any preference, milk, dark or white, any chocolate will do.

Are You Guilty of These Chocolate Habits?

In a survey carried out on behalf of the British Heart Foundation in 2015, several of our guilty chocolate eating secrets were revealed.

  • 40% of us lie about how much chocolate we eat
  • The average person in the UK eats three chocolate bars a week
  • 25% of us hide a secret stash of chocolate bars in our office drawer
  • A third of us eat chocolate on the commute to or from work to hide our consumption from our spouses and family
  • 13% of us eat chocolate in secret, behind the fridge, under the bed covers, and even when our partner leaves the room

The UK’s Favourite Chocolate Bars

When it comes to the nation’s favourite chocolate bars, our preferences differ depending on our age and sex.

In a survey carried out by the Daily Mail earlier this year, Galaxy chocolate was the top choice amongst women in the 18 to 24 and 35 to 44 years’ age group. However, men in these same age groups preferred a Mars bar. For the 65+ age group both men and women enjoyed a Mar Bar the most.

Other favourites included Dairy Milk, Snickers, Twix, KitKat, Crunchie and Twirl. In addition, youngsters enjoy a Wispa and a Double Decker, the 34- 44 years’ age group love a Boost and the over 65s still tuck into that old favourite, the Picnic chocolate bar.
