Where it all began
These yellow earplug-like creatures in blue overalls have become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon and they are the creation of French animator Pierre Coffin. It was back in 2010 that Minions portrayed as selfish, easily distracted and generally inept creatures made their big-screen debut in Despicable Me.
Clearly demonstrating the popularity of these lovable yellow creatures, Minions the movie co-directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda is already one of the most successful animated film releases of all time – with only Shrek The Third earning more.
Prequel to Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2
As a spin-off and prequel to Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, Minions the movie focuses on three Minions in particular, Kevin (portrayed as the leader of the group), Stuart (the musician) and Bob (the child) as they search first in Florida, then throughout the entire world for a new evil boss to rule their species.
Jon Hamm and Pierre Coffin provide the high pitched voice overs in the Minions movie accompanied by Sandra Bullock who provides the voice over for a female villain named Scarlett Overkill.
Storyline in a nutshell
One Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he-alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob, venture out into the world to find a new evil boss for them to follow. They embark upon a thrilling journey that leads them to their next master, Scarlet Overkill, who is the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in London.
The gibberish language spoken by these squat yellow henchmen which features a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Italian along with a sprinkling of Russian and Korean is in keeping with their characteristics which were partly inspired by the Jawas in Star Wars as well as the Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonka.
Minions’ facts and figures
Whilst there are only a limited number of distinct varieties of Minion, over 10,000 have been seen at once in adverts and on-screen. There are less than 50 possible combinations of characteristics that distinguish one Minion from another. As well as differences in height and build, some Minions feature one eye whilst others have two eyes. Every Minion character has only three fingers.
It seems that the popularity of these distinctive babbling yellow, pill-shaped servants shows no signs of waning with the release of Despicable Me 3 planned for release in 2017.
