It’s Time For A Grand National Office Sweepstake
The Grand National is the world’s most famous steeplechase as 40 horses go under starters orders with 30 fences ahead of them over the four and a half miles left-handed course.
As detailed in the infographic we’ve created here at the Post Office Shop, the Grand National race was first held in 1839 featuring 17 runners. The winning horse was aptly called ‘Lottery’!
Just like previous years, in the lead up to the 168th running of the race this Saturday held each year at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, it is traditional for a Grand National sweepstake to take place in the work place.
Arranging the Grand National office sweepstake couldn’t be simpler. Simply print out a sweepstake kit featuring all the runners, cut out the names and put them into a hat. Just make sure to remember to make a note of everyone’s picks!
Amongst the horses that will feature in the office sweepstake will be the 2014 Grand National winner Pineau De Re who lines up once again in this year’s race. Ridden to victory last year by Leighton Aspell and trained by Dr Richard Newland, Pineau De Re won the race by five lengths.
Pineau De Re will be one of 40 horses looking for victory in this year’s race. Named after a wine, Pineau De Re will seek to become the first back-to-back winner of the race since Red Rum 40 years ago.
The grueling nature of the course is illustrated by the fact that less than half of the horses usually make it all the way round to the finish line as they have to navigate each of the 30 fences including The Chair and the Water Jump.
As one of the greatest events in the annual sporting calendar, the Grand National continues to captivate the entire nation and attracts a worldwide audience of more than 600 million viewers. The 2015 Grand National, takes place at 4.15pm tomorrow.
