Hop Into Spring With A Clean

For those who follow the meteorological calendar, spring officially began on 1 March. The astronomical method places the start of spring at 20 March, but the fact remains that spring will officially begin in March, so it’s time to start spring cleaning!

While the weather might be cold lately, it will hopefully get warmer as the month continues alongside lighter mornings and nights. The origins of spring cleaning in the United Kingdom go back to being a way to refresh a room after long and stuffy winters.

Centuries ago, the only way of warming a room up was to light up a fireplace and try to prevent the heat from escaping the room. This often meant that rooms would end up sooty and slightly grimy over the winter months, and so the warmer weather or spring and the lighter days were used to air out the house and clean.

Spring cleaning is not unique to just the UK either, with the tradition being found in varying forms across the world. In fact, in China, the Lunar New Year is sometimes preceded in some families by cleaning to welcome in the New Year and sweep away the bad luck. There is even a saying in Cantonese to ‘wash away the dirt on ninyabaat’ (the 28th day of month 12). Once this is done, cleaning tools are stored away and not used for days after so they don’t accidently sweep away any good fortune.

While we may not be warming our houses with fireplaces anymore with the advent of central heating, the culture of spring cleaning has firmly remained. A survey in 2017 found that out of 1597 respondents, 81% said that they spring cleaned.
