Happy Birthday To Prince George!
Today is the second birthday of His Royal Highness, Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. And to mark the occasion and honour the young prince, a limited edition commemorative £5 coin in silver proof finish has been struck by the Royal Mint which is available for next day delivery here at the Post Office Shop.
Bearing a contemporary re-imagining of the St George and the dragon legend by esteemed artist Christopher Le Brun RA on one side, the special edition coin has been approved by William and Kate, as well as the Queen and Chancellor George Osborne. The other side of the coin features the current portrait of George’s great-grandmother, the Queen as designed by Jody Clark.
President of the Royal Academy since 2011, Christopher Le Brun has undertaken a number of commissions for the Royal Mint including to mark the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. He was also responsible for the 50 pence coin featuring an image of Kew Gardens which was released in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Christian martyr St George is a familiar figure on British coinage having first appeared on certain gold coins issued during the reign of Henry VIII and the classic St George whilst the dragon image created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817 has graced the coins of almost every monarch since George III.
The prince’s coin bears one of the most beloved classic tales of the patron saint of England. According to the Golden Legend (circa 1275), St George protected himself with the sign of the cross to slay a dragon and rescue a princess.
A commemorative coin was also released to mark the birth, christening and first birthday of Prince George who is third in line to the throne behind Prince Charles and Prince William. In addition, earlier this month the Royal Mint unveiled a special commemorative coin to mark the christening of George’s baby sister, Princess Charlotte.
