Green Office Week: Do You Recycle Inks and Toners?
Bearing in mind that it is Green office Week, and today’s theme is ‘recycle’ this seems the perfect opportunity to ensure we are all doing everything we can to dispose of Inks and Toners in an appropriate manner with minimal impact on the environment.
That means refilling or remanufacturing all those empty ink and toner cartridges we have at home and at work. Indeed it is somewhat disturbing to learn that each year in the UK, over 375 million printer cartridges are binned and end up in landfill sites. This equates to roughly 11 cartridges being thrown away every second!
Approximately 70% of all ink cartridges and 50% of all toner cartridges are not recycled and end up in landfills or in incinerators. To try and put that into perspective, this number of discarded cartridges has a combined weight of 150 million pounds buried in our nation’s landfills which is equivalent to the weight of 2.4 billion empty cans of soda.
The issue is very important from an environmental perspective when we learn that the plastics used in printer cartridges are made of engineering grade polymers which have a very slow decomposing rate of between 450 and 1000 years depending on the cartridge type.
So, as not to add to some of these mind blowing statistics what are the simple steps that can be taken to recycle ink and toner cartridges you might ask?
Well most ink and toner cartridge manufacturers provide free postage bags inside new cartridge boxes so a convenient option is to simply send the old one back to them. For example HP enable their branded ink and toner cartridges to be returned free of charge via the HP Planet Partners program.
Many libraries in our towns and cities also have ink and toner cartridge facilities or these can be collected from the comfort of our own homes or offices. There are numerous recycling websites which offer eco-friendly solutions for disposing of these consumables. Some even pay YOU for recycling them.
So follow the 3R’s and Reduce-Reuse-Recycle all those ink and toner cartridges!
