Get the Most from Your Battery Life
Today is National Battery Day. If you are constantly replacing household batteries, read our guide onto how to extend the life of your household batteries.
Use Rechargeable Batteries
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries can be charged thousands of times before they are ready to be recycled. VARTA Rechargeable C Batteries can be charged just once and will hold 75% of their power for a year if they are kept in storage.
If you do use rechargeable batteries don’t think that the battery needs to be almost empty before your recharge it. In terms of rechargeable alkaline batteries, they will actually last longer is they are recharged frequently.
Choose the Right Battery for the Device
Items such as digital cameras quickly drain the live out of a battery. Make sure to select an alkaline battery that has been specifically designed to meet the demands of your device.
Remove Batteries When Not in Use
So, your battery-operated Christmas lights have been packed away for another year. Did you remove the batteries before they went back into storage? Batteries will last longer if they are taken out of devices when they are not needed. On removal, store your batteries in a dry, cool place.
Put Batteries in the Fridge
A strange tip this but apparently works well for NiMH batteries. They can retain up to 90% of a full charge if stored in the fridge. Meanwhile, alkaline batteries will only extend their life by 5% if stored in the fridge. Whilst this isn’t a huge increase it is useful in warm climates or environments. You must remember to take batteries out of the fridge to warm up to room temperature before installing them into a device.
Remember to Recycle your Batteries
Once your battery does finally reach end of its life, remember to recycle. Our previous article Recycle Your Batteries provides all the details you need as to why and how you should recycle all your household batteries.
