The First Ever Scratch and Sniff Stamps Have Been Released
Not only can you read the mail, but you can now smell it thanks to the new scratch and sniff stamps debuted by US Postal Service. Released on 20th June, the new USPS stamps will provide customers with a treat for their senses just in time for the hot summer months.
The Frozen Treats Forever Stamps, designed by Margaret Berg, feature a range watercolour illusions of icy pops on sticks that are showcased in a variety of shapes and colours. The uniqueness of these stamps is that each one depicts its own summertime smell, including kiwi, strawberry, orange and watermelon. In true patriotic style, the American based stamps quote the words “FOREVER” and “USA” along the bottom of every stamp.
USPS express that the new stamp set “will remind customers of the sweet scent of summer when mailing and receiving letters of love, friendship, party invitations and other correspondence.”
The sugary stamps were first showcased at 6pm on June 20th at the Thinkery children’s museum in Austin, Texas. The event was free and completely open to the public, and offered educational based activities for children to get involved in. Fun workshops like design your own stamps and ice-lolly stick building challenges were held to honour the new stamp release and the Thinkery’s play-based learning.
Belgium’s Chocolate Stamps
Although the Frozen Treats stamps are the first scratch and sniff stamps on the market, they are not the first stamps to smell like confectionary. In 2013, the Belgian postal service released a series of chocolate scented and flavoured stamps to celebrate the country’s most-love national delicacy.
Belgian chocolatiers added a chocolate taste to the glue of the stamps which can be tasted when licked, confirming their status as the best chocolate-makers on the planet.
Buy Your Own Stamp Book
For as little as $10, you can buy your own book of 20 scratch and sniff stamps just in time for summer. According to the USPS Frozen Treats product page, these FOREVER® stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce price.
