Countdown to Christmas 2018
With just 20 days to go until Christmas Day, we’re kicking off the goodwill early with a Christmas 2018 facts countdown!
Whilst the snow might not yet be falling, there’s certainly a huge amount of festive spirit beginning to fill the air! To celebrate the season of goodwill and good nature, we thought we’d share some of our favourite festive fun facts with you to make even the biggest Scrooge raise a smile!
Fact 1 – The Two Biggest Selling Christmas Songs
If you’ve ever wondered what the biggest selling Christmas themed songs are in history, then wonder no more! It has been revealed that the two biggest selling Christmas songs are ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ Bing Crosby’s rendition of ‘White Christmas’ has gone on to sell more than an estimated 50 million copies worldwide! Versions of ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ have gone on to sell a total of almost 12.5 million copies, which is no mean feat either!
Fact 2 – A Man of Many Names
Whilst we probably know him by the name of Santa Claus or Father Christmas, did you know that he is known by alternative names in other countries instead? In China, Santa goes by the name of ‘Sheng Dan Lao Ren’, is known as ‘Papa Noel’ in Brazil and Peru and even goes by the moniker of ‘Pere Noel’ in France! Furthermore, Santa is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra, who is one of the world’s most popular non-biblical saints.
Fact 3 – The First Christmas Tree Decorations
Here’s another interesting piece of trivia – did you know that the first Christmas tree decorations used were apples? Shortly after this was when white candy canes and pastries shaped into stars, hearts and flowers were used. But the more traditional of Christmas tree decorations, baubles, weren’t produced until much later, where a glassmaker named Hans Grenier designed glass beads, glass baubles and tin figures that could be hung onto the trees instead.
Fact 4 – Lighting Up the Neighborhood
Across the world, those who love the Christmas season will often compete with their neighbors as to which home features the most Christmas lights on it. But for aspiring record breakers, they certainly have a tough target to beat! The world record for the most lights on a residential property is currently held by one family who adorned their home in LaGrangeville, New York, USA, with an impressive 601,736 lights in 2014!
Fact 5 – Christmas Day Nearly Didn’t Take Place on the 25th of December
To finish off is one of our most astonishing facts we uncovered – Christmas Day nearly wasn’t set to take place on the 25th of December! In fact, it was only after several discussions and formal meetings between Western Christians that the final date of the 25th was decided upon. At first, dates such as January 2nd, March 21st, March 25th, April 18th, April 19th, May 20th, May 28th and November 20th were all brought into consideration.
