Instantly recognizable due to his 7-foot 3-inch tall frame, Peter Mayhew has been described by many as ‘a big man with a big heart.’

Beginning his career as a minor actor whilst simultaneously working shifts as a hospital orderly in his earlier years, Peter Mayhew soon rose to stardom after being cast as the iconic Wookie from the Star Wars franchise, Chewbacca, in 1977 for the film Star Wars: A New Hope.

In his role as Chewbacca, Mayhew went on to become a firm fan favourite along with other supporting characters such as R2-D2 and the more recent BB-8.

He went on to be cast as Chewbacca the Wookie for several more films in the franchise including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and two of the newer films in the franchise – Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens.

Fighting Back to Reprise His Role as Chewbacca

A statement from his family on Twitter revealed how health issues had left the Chewbacca actor, Peter Mayhew, in a wheelchair in his later years, but was able to recover in time to reprise his role as the Wookie Warrior for The Force Awakens.

It explains that Mayhew “fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more in Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and that “he put his heart and soul into the role… The relationships that began then grew into the friends and family he would love for decades to come.”

Speaking on how Mayhew was passionate in his work and thrilled to have been able to become the Chewbacca actor, Mayhew’s family said that his dedication to the role “showed in every frame of the films from his knock kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth.”
