Will YOU be checking Your Work Emails On Holiday This Summer?
The summer holidays will soon be here and for many of us that will mean taking some time off work to coincide with the end of the school term to relax and recharge.
As well as cramming suitcases with all those summer clothes and travel accessories required for a well earned break, it appears many of us will also be taking business luggage with us because we will be expecting to check emails on our smart phones and do some work on the laptop whilst we are away.
That certainly appears to be the case if results of a recent survey we’ve read by workplace website Glassdoor are to be believed. It is claimed many of us struggle to switch off from our work commitments even when we are on annual leave with 44 per cent claiming they will undertake some work tasks whilst on holiday.
Apparently many of us are concerned that will be faced with an impossible mountain of work tasks to complete upon our return from annual leave if we don’t do some work on holiday. There is also a widely belief by workers that toiling away whilst on vacation can enhance career prospects and demonstrate commitment to the boss.
What’s more these concerns also mean that many of us fail to take all our holiday entitlement each year. The poll we’ve seen claims that we use on average only 77 per cent of the annual leave we are actually owed meaning employers are getting billions of pounds of work for free each year!
Observers of these findings, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development have raised concerns about employees well-being claiming that working too hard for too long without a proper break is actually detrimental to productivity in the long-term.
