Check Your Coin Collection for an EC 50p!

It’s time to have a look through your coin collection or old coin jar to seek out a rare EC 50p coin that could be worth over 100 times it’s face value! Read on to find out more.

Whilst many coin collectors consider the Kew Gardens 2009 commemorative 50p coin to be the holy grail of rare coins, the 1992-93 EC 50p coin may just be even rarer. Due to it’s lower mintage, it might be even tougher to find than the Kew Garden commemorative coin. This means it’s worth a higher amount as a result. So why is the EC 50p important for coin collectors?

The 1992-93 EC 50p

The 1992-93 EC 50p was first issued between 1992 and 1993. It was released in the same period that the UK held the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Due to this, only a limited number were produced during this timeframe. Official Royal Mint figures indicate that only 109,000 of the coins were minted. This is known to be the lowest amount of a 50p coin released since 1968. Therefore, it might be unlikely to turn up in your loose change due to it being removed from circulation in 1997. Whilst the odds are low to discover one, the rarity of the EC 50p piece makes it a precious coin to own. But how much is the 1993-93 EC 50p coin worth?

How Much is a 1992-93 EC 50p Worth?

As always with cashing in on rare and collectible coins, it’s value can often differ. This is based on how rare a coin is, the condition of the coin and the year in which the coin was minted. Due to this, hard to source coins will often attract a premium price point, and the 1992-93 EC 50p coin’s rarity might be worth cashing in on if you own one. According to eBay, the last 1992-93 EC 50p coin that was listed on the auction site sold for £56 and gained 20 bids in total. A collectable silver proof version of this same coin in its original case was able to fetch £53.30 in August. So how can you spot the EC 50p?

The first thing to pay attention to with the 1992-93 EC 50p Coin is the overall weight. When compared to the 50p coins produced today, this 50p commemorative coin is much heavier to the touch and even has rounded edges compared to the modern design. You should also look at the main design on the front of the coin. The design features 12 chairs situated around a negotiating table. In the centre of the design are 12 stars to represent the European Union’s original member-states and these also connect to the seats.
