But as we start getting closer to the start of Spring, we thought we’d take a trip to a much sunnier climate – just off from the country of Portugal in fact!
Here, is where Café Peter Sport can be found and is one of the most unique post offices currently in existence due to it being a post office situated close to the docks of a Portuguese island!
Join us as we provide some further insight into this historic building and on one of the Earth’s most truly remote destinations.
The Over 100-Year-Old Café Peter Sport
The first thing to note about Café Peter Sport is that it was first built in 1918 and has been ran as a post office for over 100 years!
Located on the Azores islands, a group of interlinked islands situated in the centre of the Atlantic Ocean, Café Peter Sport’s most frequent visitors tend to be yachters, who will often anchor their yachts and boats within the port of Horta.
Horta port is on Faial, which is the island within the middlemost of the Azores islands, and has a population of just 15,000 people.
There, just by the docks, is where Café Peter Sport grandly stands and is where mail is held for yachters that travel from across the globe!
Taking Over the Family Business
The post office has had several owners throughout its existence, with José Henrique Azevedo being the third and current owner from a family lineage.
Originally, Café Peter Sport began life as its name would suggest – a restaurant/café that would serve many of the people who would pass through the islands.
It was through the tale of his grandfather, who opened the café, that would spur on many of the additional services that the Café Peter Sport has gone on to make available to passers-by.
Traditionally, Azevedo’s grandfather would use the building in order to help keep sailors and yachtsmen fully equipped when it came to their supplies and provisions.
This approach then also stemmed an additional service, that of which was the offer to hold mail for these very same passers-through until they would arrive and pick it up.
Word soon spread of this additional purpose of the café, and it was from that point that many in the yachting and boating community would know that any mail sent to Horta would soon arrive at Café Peter Sport.
Perhaps even more astonishingly, the services that Café Peter Sport offers to this day are completely free of charge, with Azevedo commenting that “the currency he deals in is friendship” and that “being entrusted to hold mail for sailors from around the world is a source of pride”
For Azevedo, it is the very thing that makes him want to keep this unique and fascinating family business running for years to come.
