Top Artists Design Stamps for Royal Academy 250th Anniversary

Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry are two of the six artists to create original artwork for a series of stamps to celebrate the Royal Academy of Arts’ 250th Anniversary.

The set of stamps, which have been released from Royal Mail on 5th June, feature six miniature masterpieces by some of the most admired artists. Yinka Shonibare, Norman Ackroyd, Fiona Rae, and Barbara Rae have also created works for the series, with each stamp telling a unique story.

For this #FlashbackFriday, the Post Office Shop will present the Royal Academy of Arts stamps set, whilst taking a dive into artistic stamp history.

Grayson Perry’s stamp, named Summer Exhibition, portrays the animated Essex-born artist stood at the centre of exhibits on show at the Royal Academy’s London base. The stamp effectively coincides with the opening of the Summer Exhibition on 12th June, which the artist is coordinating.

In Yinka Shonibare’s piece, Queuing at the RA, the Royal Academy is also the main inspiration. This piece depicts a monochrome crowd of people queuing for entry to the Academy, holding umbrellas of bright colours.

Norman Ackroyd’s St Kilda: The Great Sea Stacs, showcases rock formations from off the coast of Hebridean Archipelago, while Barbara Rae creates the ultimate Scottish theme in the artists’ Inverleith Allotments and Edinburgh Castle piece.
