Arsenal Claim Record Twelfth FA Cup Final Win
As one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the sporting calendar, the 134th Football Association Challenge Cup final at Wembley on Saturday saw Arsenal retain the FA Cup after beating Aston Villa 4-0.
Arsenal seize the opportunity to become the most successful team in FA Cup history
Having won the FA Cup on a record twelve occasions, the Gunners victory over Aston Villa confirms that Arsenal are now the most successful team in FA Cup history.
Arsenal first won the cup way back in 1930 and previously shared the title as the joint most successful FA Cup team along with Manchester United. The Gunners retained it after comprehensively beating Aston Villa having defeated Hull City 3-2 in extra time in last year’s thrilling final.
Emphatic FA Cup victory
A dominant Arsenal team took the lead with a Theo Walcott strike before the Gunners doubled their lead soon after the interval courtesy of a spectacular long range effort from Alexi Sanchez. The result was never in doubt after Per Mertesacker added a third.
And as Arsenal’s team was being engraved on the famous FA Cup trophy in the final moments of the match, substitute Olivier Giroud then added a fourth to cap a fine Arsenal performance.
FA Cup trophy presentation
It was left to Prince William to hand the FA Cup trophy to Arsenal as the victorious north-London side collected their winning medals. But as a lifelong Aston Villa supporter, the result was certainly not well received by royalty as The Duke of Cambridge saw his side out played in the final in front of a Wembley crowd of 89,283 as well as a captive TV audience of more than half-a-billion people around the world.
Thousands of Arsenal fans greeted their football heroes as the club’s victory celebrations saw them travel on two open top buses from the Emirates Stadium to a civic reception at Islington Town Hall.
