23rd March: 2020 Stamp Price Rise Takes Effect Today
Following an announcement made earlier this year, the 2020 stamp price rise goes into effect today and affects both First and Second Class stamps.
As mentioned in our previous article based on Royal Mail’s announcement made in February, the 2020 stamp price rise has gone into effect today, with the price of First Class Stamps now costing 76p and a Second Class Stamps now standing at 65p.
Explaining the new 2020 stamp price rise, the Royal Mail provided some comments courtesy of an official press release, explaining the reasoning for the change would be to “ensure the sustainability of the one-price goes anywhere Universal Service” before adding:
“Royal Mail is operating in a challenging business environment.
The likelihood has increased that Royal Mail in the UK will be loss making in 2020-21.
We want to invest £1.8 billion in the UK to turnaround, grow and sustain the universal service.
The UK has one of the highest quality of service specifications of any major European country.”
Royal Mail Stamp Prices Still Among Best Value in Europe
Despite the 2020 stamp price rise affecting both their business customers and the general public starting from today, Royal Mail reiterate that the price of stamps is still among the best value in Europe.
Pointing towards recent research conducted by the company, their findings indicate that the European average cost for First Class mail (0-100g) still stands at £1.05, making the UK’s current rate still much cheaper despite the new rise taking the cost to 76p per letter.
