It’s time to look back throughout the course of the year as we flash back to every Special Stamps series released in 2018 in the 2018 Special Stamps Yearbook!

2018 has been an exciting and unique year for Royal Mail special stamps releases. From the wonder and amazement that gripped the country during the Royal Wedding to the marvelous and magical world of Harry Potter, there’s been something for everyone when it comes to stamps to add to your collection!

Join us as we explore the first six months of 2018 in Special Stamps, starting with January’s release all the way up to May’s bumper three releases!

January – Game of Thrones

At the start of the year, we were treated to an enthralling stamps collection based on the hit television series, Game of Thrones. Featuring 10 stamps that made up the series, each design depict either an epic moment from the series or detailed character portraits that embody the crux of their story and their involvement through the fantasy isle of Westeros.

Jon Snow GOT

Did You Know?

The first season of Game of Thrones cost between £38 million and £46 million to produce! Due to it’s increasing popularity, HBO decided to up the ante on Season 6 on the show by spending more than £76 million to increase the amount of special effects used and other exciting additions which made it one of the most stunning seasons visually yet!

February – Votes for Women

For February, attention was cast to the centenary of the Representation of the People Act which allowed women to be able to vote for the first time ever in history. 8 Special Stamps were released to celebrate this monumental victory, which each provide an insight into the trials and tribulations women encountered in their campaign to win the right to vote and change history forever.

Votes For Women Sign

Did You Know?

The Royal Albert Hall was regularly hired by suffragettes throughout their campaign to allow women to vote. Records indicate that more than 20 suffrage meetings and rallies took place at the venue between 1908 and 1918.

March – RAF Centenary

Royal Mail took to the skies in March to pay tribute and honor the services of the Royal Air Force in conjunction with their centenary year of formation. The RAF’s heroism and bravery are unparalleled to this very day and is further recognised in the form of 6 stamp designs featuring their iconic aircraft as painted by renowned aeronautical artist, Michael Turner.

RAF Hurricane Mk1

Did You Know?

A string of celebrities previously served in the RAF that you might not realise at first! This includes the likes of leading actors Richard Burton and Brian Blessed, famous poet Pam Ayres, the legendary TV personality Bruce Forsyth and Rolling Stones band member Bill Wyman!

April – Reintroduced Species

April shone a light on several successful Reintroduced Species programmes which helped to bring many previously extinct animals back to their native lands from other countries. This special stamps release sees 6 stamp designs with bright and colorful illustrations of several different animals providing a welcome sight as they enter back into today’s world.

Butterfly RS

Did You Know?

Britain’s smallest known mammal is the Pygmy Shrew. According to experts, the Pygmy Shrew is about the average size of a man’s thumb and due to its diminutive size, must eat every 2 -3 hours just to survive in the environment!

May – Owls, The Royal Wedding and The Royal Academy

One of the busiest months of the year was May, which saw the Royal Mail release three different special stamps collections! The start of May gave attention to the wonderful different species of Owls we may (or may not) encounter on a regular basis. The Owl is one of the best known but least seen birds in the United Kingdom, so the 10 special stamps designs provide a great insight into these beautiful birds of mystery.

Long Eared Owl

Did You Know?

Not all Owls will make a ‘hooting’ sound! Barn Owls can be heard to hiss and the Eastern Screech-Owl makes a sound similar to a horse. The Saw-whet Owl’s sound has been likened to an old whetstone sharpening a saw which gives it its name.

Who could forget the exciting royal occasion and celebration of the Royal Wedding that took place in May too! The marriage of HRH Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex encapsulated the hearts of the British public on the 19th of May 2018. The wedding took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor and is marked by 4 special stamps containing official engagement photographs of the Royal couple.

Harry and Megan RW

Did You Know?

200 lemons were used in order to produce Prince Harry’s & Meghan Markle’s wedding cake! Instead of a traditional wedding cake, the Royal couple opted to have an elderflower and lemon sponge cake covered with Swiss meringue buttercream served to their Royal guests instead.

And lastly, towards the end of May, we were able to recognise 250 years of magnificent art with a special stamps release on The Royal Academy of Arts. This eclectic selection of 6 stamps features some ground breaking and visually excellent artistic pieces as specially commissioned by 6 different Royal Academy members.

Royal Academy Grayson Perry

Did You Know?

The Royal Academy of Arts has a very unorthodox tradition on their Sanctioning Day. A tradition that has remained throughout their 250 years as an institution, every Sanctioning Day will see the committee served a mysterious beef tea!
