Less Than 100 Days To Go Until The General Election

On 7th May this year, millions of us will visit polling stations between 7am and 10pm to cast their vote in the 2015 General Election to decide which party should govern the country. This is the first General Election following a coalition government since way back in 1945.

Parliament will be dissolved by The Queen on Monday 30th March and it is at this point that the general election campaign starts in earnest. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there have so far been 12 British Prime Ministers since 1952.

Much of the focus for debate in the lead up to the General Election itself is expected to be the UK-wide TV debates proposed to take place on 2nd April, 16th April and 30th April . Seven parties have been invited to take part, (the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, UKIP, Plaid Cymru, the SNP and the Greens) though confirmation of attendees is as yet unclear. In 2010, the three TV debates aired on TV were watched by a total of 22 million people. Five years ago the UK voter turnout was 65.1% on the day of the last General Election in 2010.

Once the voting polls close at 10pm on the day of the General Election itself, broadcasters will reveal the results of the exit poll which will give an indication of who the next prime minister of the country will be but the official result will not be expected until the early hours of the morning.

Apparently, in each of the past five elections, Sunderland constituencies have been the first to reveal their result. So we will have to wait and see if the same thing happens again on 7th May and more importantly who will be leading the country as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

It is important to note that for anyone who wants to have their say and cast their vote at the 2015 general election, they must be registered to vote. And for anyone unable to make it to a polling station on polling day itself, it is possible to apply to vote by post or by proxy. Further details are available here.
