Write a Novel in November

November is National Novel Writing Month. As winter edges closer, there’s no better time to start that book you’ve promised yourself you would write one day.

National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short, is an online community that originated in the US nearly twenty years ago. Budding writers spend the whole of November writing a book from start to finish.  The book must be approximately 50,000 words which works out at 1,667 words a day.

The initiative is now followed all over the world, and has fostered some real success stories. Around 450 NaNoWriMo novels have been published including Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants. This novel went onto become a Hollywood film starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in 2011.

Get Writing

We have previously written on this blog about The Joy of Writing. However, the prospect of trying to write nearly 2,000 words a day for thirty consecutive days is daunting even if you do have that “great idea” for a book.

The late, great crime writer PD James, was a keen writer from her childhood days. Yet, it wasn’t until she was in her forties that her first novel was published.

A year before her death, aged 94, she gave the BBC these top 10 tips to becoming an author.

  1. You must be born to write
  2. Write about what you know.
  3. Find your own routine. Write by hand or using a laptop, whichever you find more comfortable.
  4. Understand that the world of publishing is changing, for example, self-publishing is now possible.
  5. Read, write and don’t daydream. Look at what makes certain authors successful but don’t copy them.
  6. Enjoy your own company.
  7. Choose a good setting in which your novel takes place.
  8. Never go anywhere without a notebook.
  9. Don’t talk about your book before its finished.
  10. Know when to stop.
