Rare Sir Isaac Newton 50p Launched

A rare Sir Isaac Newton 50p coin is being launched by the Royal Mint in association with the National Trust. The launch coincides with the 375th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s most famous scientists.

In addition to Sir Isaac Newton’s scientific work in physics and astronomy, he was also Master of The Royal Mint for thirty years. In 1717, he wrote a report known as “the valuation of the guinea.” This piece of work was pivotal in establishing the gold coin as the leading currency of the United Kingdom. Therefore, this coin is a fitting tribute to the man and his legacy.

The design by Aaron West, is based upon elements of Proposition 11, in Book One of Newton’s Principia Mathematica. Collectors will be hoping this coin becomes one of the rarest 50p coins in circulation. Where You Can Find This Rare 50p Coin

Newtons apple tree at Woolsthorpe Manor

Initially, only 375 of these rare Sir Isaac Newton 50p coins will enter circulation. They will be released via the cash tills at Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, Newton’s birthplace.  The rest of the country must wait a few months before the coin is circulated elsewhere.

It is at Woolsthorpe Manor where the famous apple tree, synonymous with Newton’s discovery of the laws of gravity was located. In 1820, the tree blew down in a storm. However, the tree apparently remained rooted, re-grew again and remains a popular visitor attraction today. Woolsthorpe Manor and the apple tree are now part of the National Trust and are open to the public all year around.
