A New Owner for the Tardis

Big news for Doctor Who fans today. Peter Capaldi is stepping down, and the hunt for a new Doctor is on.

The unexpected announcement that Capaldi is stepping down as Doctor Who was made by the actor during an interview with Jo Whiley on her Radio 2 show last night.

Last December, the Doctor Who Christmas Special proved a hit with viewers when it was broadcast on Christmas Day. A new series in the Spring will still feature Capaldi, who is the 12th actor to play the Time Lord. His final appearance will be later this year in the 2017 Doctor Who Christmas Special.

Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat is also leaving the show at the end of 2017. He is to be replaced by the writer of the widely acclaimed drama Broadchurch, Chris Chibnall.

A New Doctor Who

Speculation and rumour is mounting as to who will be the new Doctor?

The front runner is Ben Whishaw, best known for his portrayal as Q in the recent James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. Other contenders include Richard Ayoade from the comedy IT Crowd, Idris Elba and Rory Kinnear.

Is a Female Doctor on the Cards?

However, after gracing our screens for over 50 years, maybe it is time for a female Doctor Who?

When asked who he thought should take over, Peter Capaldi said:

“I would like Francis de la Tour as the first female doctor – that would be great”.

Several other actresses have also been mentioned, most notably Olivia Coleman. With an array of dramatic and comedic roles on her CV, Coleman also links to Chris Chibnell as she plays DS Ellie Miller in Broadchurch. Other names include Miranda Hart and Helena Bonham Carter.
