Dreaming of a White Christmas?
This weekend has seen large areas of the country covered in snow for the first time this winter. So, can we start dreaming of a white Christmas?
Today, many children will be enjoying a snow day away from school, always a bonus. Meanwhile, extreme weather warnings from the Met Office are still in place for the East coast of England, Scotland, Central England and the South East.
According to bookmakers, the odds for a white Christmas are their lowest for over a decade. In fact, the odds of snow falling anywhere in the UK every day for the rest of the year have gone from 100/1 to 50/1.
A White Christmas in the UK
It is reported that the country may experience Arctic conditions and freezing temperatures right up to Christmas Day. Yet, how often has the UK experienced a White Christmas?
You may be surprised to learn it is more common than you might first think. In the past 54 years, it has snowed somewhere in the UK 38 times, (more often than not in Scotland).
In the past, for it to be officially classed as a white Christmas, snow had to fall on the Met Office building in London. However, this definition has been changed. Now, the Met Office state for it to be a white Christmas:
“…one snowflake must be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25th December somewhere in the UK”.
The last white Christmas in the UK was seven years ago in 2010. That year, saw snow on the ground at 83% of weather stations in the UK which was the highest ever recorded. Snow or sleet also fell at 19% of the stations.
Previously, there was also a white Christmas in 2009. 13% of stations records snow or sleet falling on Christmas Day and 57% had lying snow on the ground.
In 2015, there was technically a White Christmas with 10% of weather stations recording snow fall. Yet in this year nowhere reported any snow lying on the ground.
