The nativity story in a nutshell
The classic biblical tale from more than two thousand years ago was set in the town of Nazareth where a young woman called Mary lived.
Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph who was from Bethlehem when one day an angel appeared and informed her she was to have a special baby who would be God’s son and should be called Jesus.
The couple travelled on a donkey a considerable distance over the hills of Galilee to reach Bethlehem to pay a special tax.
No room at the inn
On arrival in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph found that there was no space for them until one innkeeper eventually found room for them. Their accommodation was a stable where the innkeeper kept his animals. Just a few hours after their arrival, Mary gave birth to her son, baby Jesus.
Jesus was wrapped in strips of cloth and laid in a manger full of hay. The shepherds were informed that the Son of God had been born and made their way to the stable to meet Jesus proclaiming he was the saviour of the world.
Wise Men who saw a new bright star in the sky then also descended on the stable in Bethlehem where they presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
